Access to opportunities and training in behavioral and experimental economics under distinguished faculty and post-doctoral researchers yielded tangible professional recognition for me, notably, this expertise led to an offer and recruitment interest from a newly formed UAE government-based behavioral nudge unit.

BID Minor

Capstone Thematic Seminar

Behavioral Institutional Design (BID) Minor

A new and innovative Minor at NYUAD

The Behavioral Institutional Design (BID) Minor at NYU Abu Dhabi is designed to provide students with the theoretical and empirical tools needed to understand human behavioral diversity and its impact on institutional design. Offered through the Center for Behavioral Institutional Design (C-BID), this interdisciplinary minor explores critical questions such as how wealth influences dishonesty, how societies can move away from harmful social norms, whether transparent decision-making enhances public trust, and if deadlines can facilitate bargaining agreements.

Students in the BID Minor will gain expertise across multiple disciplines, including economics, psychology, computer science, mathematics, sociology, political science, and neuroscience. With a strong emphasis on hands-on learning, the program integrates experiments and research projects into coursework, ensuring a deep engagement with behavioral science. The minor also enhances the capstone experience, providing access to novel datasets unique to C-BID and expert mentorship. Beyond the classroom, students will see real-world applications of behavioral science, a field already utilized by over 200 governmental units worldwide for policymaking. The extensive C-BID network offers valuable career and academic advancement opportunities.

Course Requirements

Students must complete three foundational courses and two electives. The required courses lay the groundwork for understanding how individuals respond to incentives, how to identify causal relationships in social science, and how to evaluate behavioral assumptions, institutions, and policies. These include:

  • Markets (SOCSC-UH 1111)
  • Research Design and Causality in Social Science (SOCSC-UH 2212)
  • Experimental Economics (ECON-UH 2320E)

To complement this foundation, students will select two electives from a range of courses in social science, psychology, computer science, and the core curriculum. These electives allow for deeper exploration of behavioral institutional design from multiple perspectives, making this minor an excellent choice for students interested in research, policy work, and interdisciplinary problem-solving.
